The public is demanding action on AI
The Pittsburgh AI Safety Coalition is building grassroots support for meaningful AI safety legislation. There are many questions about AI that we need to answer as a society, but our focus is on catastrophic risk. As long as there is a meaningful possibility of a catastrophic outcome, we must prioritize mitigating those risks. The recent Hugging Face incident and Jacob Coxon's resignation from Anthropic have helped move catastrophic risk from AI into mainstream political discourse. A recent poll showed that more than 70% of Americans are concerned about existential risk from AI.
Make AI safety a political priority
Our primary goal is to build the political salience of AI safety as an issue, with the aim of bringing about meaningful legislation at both the national and international levels.
We do this by demonstrating to legislators and the broader political ecosystem that a large, bipartisan constituency cares about this and demands action.
What kind of coalition we are
Nonpartisan
The coalition exists to address one issue: AI safety. We actively seek members across the political spectrum. We understand that our society is in a moment of political polarization but firmly believe that we can come together around this issue, which will touch the lives of everyone in one way or another.
Diverse membership
We seek out membership from people across all walks of life, whether they have prior technical knowledge about AI or not.

Pittsburgh is a fast-developing AI hub. Living in a tech-focused city gives us a platform to speak out about the risks from AI and a unique opportunity to move our legislators.
